A reseller's guide to ex-catalogue stock

22 May 2026·StockSeller Team

Ex-catalogue stock is one of the most misunderstood corners of the UK wholesale market. New resellers hear ‘ex-catalogue’ and assume damaged returns; experienced ones know it’s often the best new-in-box stock in the entire wholesale clearance chain. Here’s the breakdown.

What is ex-catalogue stock?

Ex-catalogue stock is product originally sold via catalogue or home-shopping retailers (Argos, JD Williams, Studio, Freemans, etc.). When the season ends and unsold inventory goes back to the warehouse, or customers return items, it’s wholesaled to the trade in bulk — typically at 60–80% off RRP.

Condition grades

  • Grade A: new in original packaging, retail-ready
  • Grade B: open box / damaged outer, item itself unused
  • Grade C: customer returns, may need refurb or testing

Fastest-moving categories in 2026

Home electricals, small kitchen appliances, beauty (Christmas gift-set overstock) and children’s toys. Slowest movers tend to be fashion and seasonal décor.

Where to find ex-catalogue lots

Direct from the retailers’ clearance teams (hard to access), via mixed-lot wholesalers, or on wholesale stock marketplaces. Marketplaces are the most accessible route for new resellers because the seller is verified and the listing includes a manifest and photos.

Common reseller mistakes

Buying without reading the manifest, ignoring shipping costs, and assuming Grade A means ‘perfect’. Always price your sell-through against the worst-case grade in the lot, not the best.
